Intro to MechOrganic

MechOrganic is a 2D physics-based vehicle (side scroller) combat game which will be developed using XNA 3.0 and Farseer Physics Engine. Players will be able to create their own combat vehicles using basic objects such as wheels, shaft and motors etc to maneuver in different terrains, overcome obstacles and attack opponents. Each object will have its own unique properties which let the player mix and match to overcome different challenges. Players can also add or customize weapons (such as missiles launcher etc) onto their vehicles at higher levels.

This project was previously called Mechzor and has been renamed to MechOrganic on 20th Feb 09′. MechOrganic is a term derived from Starwars. It holds the meaning of organisms being embedded onto a machine and becoming part of the living machine.

Alot of our ideas were inspired by Physics-based game such as Fantastic Contraption, Crayon Physics, Phun and Jello-Car etc. These mentioned games are generally puzzle games in nature which are quite different from our game. In MechOrganic, the game aims to support multiple-players and engage players in combat, speed & strategy rather than pure puzzle solving.

The development team behind this little game called themselves Twilight, probably they think that they can work best during that period of time.. The team is made up of 1 designer and 3 programmers.

The project’s sprint 2 has just ended. Here are some features of the existing prototype:

  • Basic Level Editor – Create some static, non-static & activatable objects in the world.
  • Basic Vehicle Editor – Some simple joints, motors & wheels to get it running..
  • Loading & Saving of multiple levels/ vehicles

This is how the game looks like currently:

For the next sprint, the team hopes to develop the multiple-players framework & make it a playable demo. So stay tune for more updates!
